Adding Editions

At the far right of the page, you will notice that the admin menu stays consistent once Logged in. The options available for changing Edition content are in the main part of the window in the larger table cell at left of the page.

If there is a current edition available already, you will see the files listed, sorted by the Date, Section and Page.*

Beside each file are two buttons:

View Section or Delete

Clicking the View button will open the PDF file in a new browser window.

Clicking the Delete button will delete the file from the system completely. This action takes place IMMEDIATELY when the button is clicked. The only way to "undo" this operation is to re-upload the PDF file.

After the end of the current content list, you will notice an upload section:

Upload PDF File

This section is used to upload a file from your computer's Hard Drive (HDD). Above the red Upload button is a text field and a Browse button (system generated)

Clicking the Browse button will open a "file manager" style window where you Navigate to the file you want to add. Highlight the file and add ("open" button or double click on a PC) it.

The path to the file will appear in the text field. Once you click the Upload PDF button, the file will then be uploaded from your HDD to the Internet Server.

Repeat the process until you have uploaded all files in your current edition.

The more pages of the Newspaper you include in a PDF file, the larger the file size will be and the longer it will take to upload the file initially. It will also take longer for viewer's to download individual files.

Editing Editions

To Edit the content of your edition, you simply replace the PDF file. Issues are displayed by parsing information in the filename so if you make changes to a PDF file you simply need to Delete the existing file and upload the corrected version to replace it.

* File Naming Conventions

ins_YYYYMMDD_A##_#-#.pdf

ins_20080213_a12_01.pdf

  • ins - Three letter code that identifies the Paper. Not used in display.

  • YYYYMMDD (20080213) - The Edition Date. Displayed as 2008 02 13

  • A## (a12) - The Section and number of pages in the section. At present, only the Section is displayed.

  • #-#.pdf - The first and last page numbers in the file and the file extension (.pdf). If the publication is uploaded a page at a time, only the actual page number (01 in this sample) is required. If there is a time when more than one page is included in a file, adding the last page number in -# format (1-2 for example) will make the page numbers display correctly. The extension (.pdf) is parsed out of the display.

Deleting Editions

At present, there are no archive functionalities incorporated into the admin part of the Subsciption routine.** The list of files will continue to get longer as files are added to the server, with Newest Editions coming before old editions. The administrator must delete old content as desired to keep the system clean and neat. A process to delete entire additions at a time will be included in the next routine upgrade.

** Archives

Archives can be kept for an indefinite period. The Archive Plug In Module for this system is an extra add-on feature and is something that must be considered fully before implementation. It makes for a really clean layout for your Website and makes for a good opportunity for your subscribership to view editions of your Newspaper from long ago. This could make for a good "extra value" in sales promotion, however, since PDF files can be quite large in byte size, Archiving can be costly in Bandwidth and Storage from a Web Service standpoint.

It is also a more complex database add on and therefore costs more to implement.
